History & Origin
Mentioned in the Skanda Purana, this cave was rediscovered by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. It is said that the cave holds the secrets of the four Yugas and the end of the world.
The Cave of Gods
Patal Bhuvaneshwar is not just a cave; it is a subterranean spiritual complex. As you descend through a narrow tunnel, the limestone formations open up into a massive chamber where the history of Hindu mythology is etched in stone.
Key Spiritual Landmarks Inside:
- The Sheshnag: A massive stalactite formation resembling the thousand-headed serpent holding the earth.
- The Four Entrances: Named Randwar, Paapdwar, Dharamdwar, and Mokshadwar. (Legend says Paapdwar closed after Ravana's death).
- The Havan Kund: Formations representing the sacrificial fire of King Janamejaya.
- The Pauranic Calendar: Stalactites that are said to grow a few millimeters every year, marking the progress of the Kali Yuga.

- Entry: You must be accompanied by a licensed local guide.
- Health Note: The descent is steep and narrow; not recommended for those with severe claustrophobia or heart conditions.
