History & Origin
Originally built by the Gorkhas in 1789 after they invaded the region, the fort was later used by the British administration. It serves as a reminder of the strategic importance of Pithoragarh as a frontier town.
A Gorkha Legacy
Pithoragarh Fort is located on a hillock in the center of the town. While much of the original structure was modified during the British era and later used as a government treasury, its high stone walls still offer a commanding view of the valley.
Features:
- Architecture: Traditional dry-stack stone masonry characteristic of the Gorkha military style.
- The View: From the ramparts, you can see the Naini Saini airstrip to the south and the Himalayas to the north.
- Proximity: Walking distance from the main Pithoragarh bus stand.
